10 Tips for Planning a Colorado Elopement

If you're considering an elopement, Colorado is an absolutely stunning place to do it. With its towering mountains, sprawling meadows, and crystal-clear lakes, the state has no shortage of breathtaking backdrops for your special day. As a Colorado elopement videographer, I've had the pleasure of capturing many beautiful elopements in this wonderful state. If, after reading this, it seems daunting DON’T WORRY! We’ve planned hundreds of elopements and can take care of everything on this list to make this a magical day for you and your partner.

So, let’s jump in - here are some tips to help you plan your own Colorado elopement:

1. Choose your location wisely.

One of the great things about eloping in Colorado is that you have a wide variety of locations to choose from. Whether you're looking for a mountain view, a waterfall, a wildflower-filled meadow, or a lakeside setting, there's a spot in Colorado that will fit the bill. Some popular spots for Colorado elopements include Rocky Mountain National Park, Maroon Bells, Garden of the Gods, and Great Sand Dunes National Park.

2. Check the weather.

Colorado weather can be unpredictable, so be sure to check the forecast before you head out. Summer days can be hot and sunny, but afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon. Fall and winter weather can be chilly, and snow is always a possibility at higher elevations. Make sure you bring appropriate clothing and gear for the conditions.

3. Get the necessary permits.

Many of the most popular Colorado elopement locations require permits, so be sure to check with the local authorities before you head out. Permits may be required for activities like hiking, camping, and photography/videography. Make sure you obtain any necessary permits well in advance of your elopement.

4. Hire a Colorado elopement videographer.

Of course, I couldn't leave this one out! Hiring a Colorado elopement videographer is a great way to ensure that your special day is captured beautifully. Your videographer can help you choose the perfect location, provide advice on timing and lighting, and capture all the little moments that make your elopement unique. Plus, having a video of your elopement means you can relive the magic over and over again.

5. Plan your celebration.

Just because you're eloping doesn't mean you can't celebrate! Plan a special meal, go out for drinks, or do something else to mark the occasion. You might even consider having a small reception with family and friends once you return home.

6. Consider the time of year.

While Colorado is beautiful year-round, the seasons offer different advantages and challenges. Summer is the most popular time for elopements, but the fall offers stunning autumn colors, while winter provides a winter wonderland with snow-covered mountains. Spring offers blooming wildflowers, but it can be muddy and unpredictable. Think about the atmosphere you want for your special day, and choose a time of year that suits your preferences and needs.

7. Think about transportation.

Many of Colorado's best elopement locations are remote and require a bit of a hike or a drive to reach. Make sure you have transportation figured out in advance, whether it's renting a car, hiring a driver, or taking a shuttle. Be sure to plan for the time it will take to get to your location and to allow for any unexpected delays or issues.

8. Consider working with an elopement planner.

While eloping may seem like a simple way to get married, it still requires some planning and coordination. If you want to take the stress out of the planning process, consider working with an elopement planner. They can help you with everything from choosing the perfect location to arranging vendors and handling logistics. This can help you enjoy your special day without worrying about the details.

9. Don't forget about the legalities.

While eloping may seem like a spontaneous and carefree way to get married, there are still some legal requirements that need to be met. Make sure you research the marriage laws in Colorado and obtain the necessary licenses and permits. You can visit the Colorado State website to learn more about marriage licenses and other requirements or you can watch this Youtube short about how to get your marriage license!

10. Understand that you can’t always plan for the unexpected.

Even with the best planning, unexpected things can happen on your elopement day and that’s what makes it magical. You get to just be in the moment, feel, breathe and cuddle with the person you love most in the world.
